The Sacred Ascent
The upward, inward, and outward journey toward full spiritual realization, union, and divine embodiment — the eternal upward direction, and the mastery tier of the Path.
The Ascent is the vertical axis of this whole architecture. The Game is horizontal — cells, quests, seasons, the flame passed sideways across a world. The Ascent is what rises through it, and the canon states why both are needed: outer change without inner change merely replicates the old patterns in new clothing.
It appears twice in the corpus, and the two senses are worth holding apart. In the Pattern Language's Root and Trunk it is the eternal upward direction — an orientation, not a stage, available in any moment. On The Sovereign Path it is the eleventh of twelve stages, the mastery tier that follows Convergence and the Covenant, and beneath it the canon names The 72 Gates of the Sacred Ascent.
It is load-bearing because it sets a ceiling on nothing. The Path does not terminate in competence; The Loop That Has No End and The Eternal Divine Play refuse a final rung. That refusal is what keeps Mastery from becoming rank and Belt Progression from becoming caste: a belt is a witnessed mark that you did a thing when it counted, not a position above anyone.
In play it is rarely named at the table. It appears as the difference between a Cell that gets things done and a Cell whose members are visibly becoming different people over seasons — and as the canon's insistence that the second is not a bonus.
