Legitimacy

Rightfulness in the eyes of Spirit, Logos, and the governed — grounded in Sovereignty, Consent, and alignment with the Divine.

Legitimacy is the three-fold test of any authority. Does it accord with what is actually true and good (Logos)? Is it alive rather than merely correct (Spirit)? And do the people it binds say yes, now, and freely (Consent)? Power that passes one or two of these is not legitimate; it is merely effective, which is the condition of most rule in the old world.

Its load-bearing function is that it gives players something to point at besides force or law. When a body drifts, the question is not is this permitted but is this legitimate — and a body that can ask that question out loud has a way back. Legitimacy is also what makes obedience unnecessary: where people consent to what governs them and can see its reasoning, compliance is not extracted, it is given.

The canon's root statement is that the time of false authority is over, and that authority is legitimate only where it reflects Spirit, intention, and Logos in service of the flourishing of all. That is a high bar by design; the corresponding humility is that legitimacy is continuously conferred and can be continuously lost. It is a living state, not a credential.

In play it is the standing question behind Impeachment, Recourse, Withdrawal Of Consent, and every review date. A Cell that renews its agreements each Season is re-conferring legitimacy on purpose rather than letting it lapse into assumption.
