The Return

What comes back down from the whole to the Cell — and how paper meets the wire. The paper is always the original.

Each turning, the greater Game sends one page back down the same path the sheets came up: how the whole body is, in a word and a line; the best stories from everywhere; the requests a Cell here might answer; the one sentence that ties this Cell's Quest to the larger work; and, when there is one, the new The edition. A home copies the page and reads it at its evening. A Cell hears the sentence that concerns it from a person, at its own table — which is the only way most people will ever meet the plan, and it is enough.

It is load-bearing because it is how a body plans without commanding. Nobody hands a table its work. What comes down is context: where the whole is, what others have done, what is needed, and where this table's Quest sits in the larger picture — the sentence that fills the blank line on The Questcard. A Cell never has to read The plan of the whole; it receives the part that concerns it, from a person, at the right time.

It is also the rule about records. Where there is a wire, someone types the sheets in line for line and a season appears on The Board beside every other. The typing is a copy; the paper stays in the box. Nothing typed ever replaces a sheet, and if the two disagree, the paper with two signatures is the record. Where the wire is not coming, the sheets travel as they always did, by hand, from table to table — the Game is still whole; it is simply a game of paper for now, and every line will be waiting when the wire comes. What the greater Game keeps is every sheet ever sent, in order, unaltered, with its signatures and line count: not a database anyone owns, but the sum of every table's word, held at every level that received it, so that no one place can lose it or change it.
