In Every Future
The fuller form of this page is the One Book's chapter 21 In Every Future — what to do in each case, which carries THE PAGE for the degraded case. This page holds the distribution and the twelve families as first drawn.
One hundred forty-four thousand futures for the seven years from 2026 to 2033, drawn from nine things that could go differently, banded into twelve families, and asked one question each: what does a Cell do here? The answer came back the same twelve times. That sameness is the finding. What changes across the families is not the response but its tempo, its medium, what must be protected while it runs, and the one number worth watching. Drawn 2026-09-22, evening. The priors are guesses, and they are kept — with everything the instrument cannot see — in The Priors and the Method.
The one answer
Whether or not anything bad happens, the response is the same, and that is not a consolation prize. It is the design.
A Cell of three to thirteen people who keep their word to each other week by week, choose one real Quest a Season, put something in the middle of the table as the Offering, write the fourteen lines of the Season Sheet at each turning and send them to their Home, and pass the Flame to two or three within a week — that body is the thing that survives the hard futures and the thing that composes Heaven in the gentle ones. It needs no permission, no funding, no infrastructure, and no crisis to justify it. It runs on a notebook, a table, and a given word. In a world that holds together it is how a neighbourhood becomes trustworthy. In a world that comes apart it is the organ that keeps functioning when the larger organs do not. Federated into supercells and into a Community Company, it is how ten thousand people become one body without anyone being in charge of it.
This is the steward's frame, set on 2026-09-22: whether or not anything bad happens, it is the way to co-create Heaven. It is a frame, not a forecast. The model below says nothing about what will happen; it says what shapes of world are worth being ready for, and it shows that the readiness is one readiness.
The canon reached the same floor by another road. The Five Collapse Scenarios (status: captured, from the audit of The Last Chance) names five futures with weighted probabilities and closes: across all five scenarios, the response is the same — build the New, in parallel, while there is still time. The work succeeds in every scenario. The work fails only if it is not undertaken. This page does not improve on that sentence. It adds a second axis the scenarios do not carry — how far the Game itself has reached — and, for each resulting family, a judgment decided now rather than in the moment.
Preset judgments. Every case below ends with one. The idea travels from the rooms of September 2026 and its sources stay there: in a hard hour, deliberation is the scarcest resource, so the deliberation is done here, in the calm, and what is left for the hour is recognition. Each block names the one signal that says the case has arrived, and what a Cell, a Supercell, and a community body are already committed to do that day. A preset judgment is not a law. It is a standing decision of this text, offered to any body that wants one, revisable by Proposal at a turning like everything else.
The method, honestly
Nine dimensions were named, each with three states and a loosely held prior weight. One hundred forty-four thousand futures were drawn at random in proportion to those weights — one state from each dimension per future. Each future was scored for severity (thirteen points available; the benign state of every dimension scores zero) and banded: Gentle 0–3, Turbulent 4–6, Hard 7–9, Severe 10–13. That band was crossed with the ninth dimension, the Game's reach by 2030: few (a few thousand players), regional (the first three percent in some regions), planetary (the first three percent everywhere). Twelve families.
The nine: how the old world goes · how institutions respond · ecological shock · economic regime · conflict · technology · information · the Game's reach · health. The weights are guesses made in one evening by one reading of one moment. They are the most arguable thing here, they are stated in full on The Priors and the Method, and anyone may change them and draw again.
| Family | Futures | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Turbulent · reach few | 30,609 | 21.3% |
| Hard · reach few | 25,958 | 18.0% |
| Turbulent · reach regional | 23,918 | 16.6% |

| Hard · reach planetary | 11,611 | 8.1% |
| Gentle · reach few | 5,168 | 3.6% |
| Gentle · reach regional | 3,872 | 2.7% |
| Severe · reach few | 3,098 | 2.2% |
| Severe · reach regional | 2,471 | 1.7% |
| Gentle · reach planetary | 2,326 | 1.6% |
| Severe · reach planetary | 1,404 | 1.0% |
By band: Gentle 7.9%, Turbulent 47.3%, Hard 39.9%, Severe 4.8%. By reach: few 45.0%, regional 34.9%, planetary 20.1%.
The severity histogram, in one line: the peak sits at six of a possible thirteen (28,094 futures), the shoulders at five and seven carry 24,058 and 26,271, and the tails are thin — sixty futures scored zero, twenty-seven scored thirteen.
What the model does not know. It treats the nine dimensions as independent, when in the world they pull hard on one another; the middle is therefore probably too fat and both tails too thin. It has no time axis: a future here is a bag of conditions with no order and no duration. It cannot imagine improvement, because no state scores below zero. And it drew the Game's reach as though reach happened to us, when reach is the one row that is ours — the consequence of Cells forming, keeping their word, and passing the Flame. Read that row as a target, not a prior. This is a shape, not a forecast. We Do Not Know how the next seven years go, and saying so out loud is part of the method.
The invariant response
The checklist a Cell can run this week, in any of the twelve families. Nothing here waits on conditions.
- Keep the Turn. One gathering, one hour or two, the same day and place. In turn, each person: what I said I would do and whether I did it · the gap, honestly, and what I learned · what I will do this week · what I offer, and what I ask. Someone marks the Scorecard. Someone tells one story. Close in gratitude.
- Give and keep your word. I will ___ by ___, said aloud. Kept, or a gap learned from, without blame. Write both in the Record.
- Put something in the middle. The Offering, each week, freely, whatever is real for you. It becomes the Cell's Commons.
- Hold one Quest. One real thing, this season, that your Cell can point to afterward, with a done when line on its Questcard.
- Pass The Flame. Two or three you know are ready, within a week; the naming begins at your first gathering. Their Cell is their own; you are their Carrier and their first Home.
- Fill the Season Sheet at the turning. Fourteen numbered lines, witnessed by two hosts, dated, with a count of its lines of writing. Send it to your Home.
- Know your Home, and whose Home you are. Your Home Cell, your Carrier, and the Cells that look to you. Three Cells that have become one another's home are a Supercell.
- Hold the floor of care. When a member is in danger, in body or in mind, the Circle acts first and records later. No card is more important than the person at the table.
- Name your three. The three people you would most trust to help lead your community through what is coming — not family, not the famous, not the loud: the faithful. Send the Seed to the people you love.
- Keep a paper copy. Of the seed text, of your Field of Agreements, of the last Season Sheet. The notebook is the floor the whole network stands on.
- Run the Daily Way. Pause, ground, breathe, remember, realign, recommit. The body that keeps the Turn is made of people who keep themselves.
Eleven items, none of which requires the world to be any particular way. Everything that follows is commentary on these.
The twelve families
Each family below is a band of severity crossed with a reach, not a single predicted world. Read the one nearest the world you are actually in.
The four bands are not four separate destinies. Collapse and ascension are one motion, not two — The Collapse-Ascension Nexus (canon) names the hour in which what is failing can no longer be saved by repair and what is arising cannot yet stand alone, and says the energy released by the dissolution of the Old is the very energy available for the composition of the New. That frame governs the Hard and Severe sections especially: the instruction there is never merely to survive. It is to be the place the released energy flows toward.
Gentle · reach few — 5,168 futures · 3.6%
The old order strains and does not break. Institutions muddle through, some brittle, some adaptive. Prices are annoying, the wars stay where they are, the networks stay open. Life is recognizable. The Game is small: a few thousand players scattered across the world, most of whom have never met another Cell.
The danger in this family is not catastrophe; it is drift. Nothing outside forces the keeping of a word, so Cells form warmly and dissolve quietly, and the Seed competes for attention with a thousand other interesting things. This is also where the one answer is hardest to believe and most valuable: a gentle world is the cheapest place to build the body a harder world would need, because none of the Cell's capacity is going to triage. Everything can go into making something good.
Do first: fix the day, hour, and place of the Turn, and pass the Flame within seven days. The Cell: choose a Quest that is plainly good in an ordinary world — a thing repaired, a neighbour fed, a piece of ground restored. Do not wait for an emergency to justify your existence. The supercell: find two other Cells and become one another's Home before there is any pressure to. The community body: not yet; name the place, start counting toward the three hundred, stay at Tier 0 with no formal structure. The rhythm: ordinary — weekly Turn, ninety-day Season, screens are fine, but write one Season Sheet by hand from the very first turning so the hand knows how. Protect: the practice from becoming a discussion group, and the Commons from the one Anti-Pattern that shows up at every gentle door — the person who came to drain it. The Flame: hand to hand, at the pace of trust. Watch: Season Sheet line 7 — flames passed, and Cells formed from them. In a gentle world, reach is the binding constraint and nothing else is.
Preset judgment. Signal: two consecutive turnings in which line 7 reads zero. Cell: the next Turn is given entirely to naming the people each member would carry the Flame to, and each member commits to one conversation before the following Turn. Supercell: offers a host — one gathering where a new Cell can be formed from the named. Community body: n/a at this reach.
Gentle · reach regional — 3,872 futures · 2.7%
The world is still workable, and in some regions the first three percent hold. There are towns and bioregions where a Cell is an ordinary thing, and enormous areas where nobody has heard of any of it. Asymmetry is the defining feature of this family, and it is uncomfortable: the dense places feel like the world is turning, and they are wrong.
The temptation here arrives dressed as success: consolidate, brand, build a centre, hire staff for the regional body. The Anti-Patterns that kill movements — Centralization Of Power, Institutional Idolatry, the Golden Calf — come in through that door, not through the hard ones.
Do first: write down what your Cells agreed at the door. That writing is the Field of Agreements, regrown. The Cell: keep playing its own Quest; a Cell that has become the staff of a regional body has stopped being a Cell. The supercell: form in earnest; rotate hosting; set term limits, because a role held forever quietly becomes a throne. The community body: where the Cells of a place number toward three hundred, found the Community Company — a steering committee of four to seven that knows it is scaffolding and dissolves its own founding authority, a charter, and the three seats: for living systems, for future generations, and for the Whole. The rhythm: gather the turnings in person; run a full OmniSpection — inward, outward, backward, forward, in community. Protect: the asset lock and the purpose lock; a purpose that can be amended away will be. The Flame: outward from dense regions to thin ones, carried by people who actually move, not by campaigns. Watch: line 12 — proposals. A regional body that is still governed by its members produces a steady flow of them upward; a body that has calcified into an institution produces none, and its members do not notice for a year.
Preset judgment. Signal: a turning at which the supercell received no proposals from its Cells, or a role has been held by the same person for three consecutive seasons. Cell: brings one proposal, in one sentence, to the next turning. Supercell: rotates the role that turning, without prejudice to the person. Community body: reads its charter aloud at the turning and reviews the three seats — whether each is occupied and whether it spoke this season.

The gentlest family with the widest reach: no great break, and three in a hundred in every community on Earth. The old institutions still stand and mostly work; the new body grows alongside them rather than against them. In this future the Covenant and the Jubilee at the far end of the plan are not rhetoric — they are schedulable.
The risk is capture and imitation. A large, admired, benign body attracts those who would wear it, and the False Prophet speaks the language of liberation. The protection is structural, and most of it is already written: the instance law holds that the pattern is what makes instances one body — anyone may take the Seed and start their own — so there is no centre to seize, and no one from whom permission flows.
Do first: publish the minimum standards and hold to them. Interoperability is the only thing that keeps a planetary body one body without a centre. The Cell: unchanged. A Cell's week does not become grander because the body around it did. The supercell: keep the fourteen lines and their numbering identical in every language; translate the words, keep the order. The community body: federate Company to Company, reciprocally, with six-capital accounting visible to members. The rhythm: the sun keeps the calendar; the turnings fall on the same days everywhere, which no one owns and no one can move. Protect: the asset and purpose locks, role rotation, and the instance law. The Flame: still one hand at a time; nothing grows by making the centre larger. Watch: line 14 — the share of Cells whose sheet arrives complete, witnessed by two hosts, dated, with its line count. A planetary body is exactly as real as that fraction.
Preset judgment. Signal: complete sheets fall below four in five at any turning, or a body begins describing itself as the centre. Cell: completes and witnesses its own sheet before critiquing anyone else's. Supercell: returns incomplete sheets to their Cells with the missing line named, and nothing else. Community body: publishes its own six-capital accounts that season and restates the instance law in its charter.
Turbulent · reach few — 30,609 futures · 21.3%
The single most likely family in the draw. Crises arrive stepwise, roughly one every year or two; institutions are brittle and defensive; ecological damage lands regionally; money is either inflating or seizing up; wars stay contained; capability concentrates; information narrows. Most lives get harder in ways that are survivable and demoralizing at once. The Game is a few thousand players — small enough that every Cell feels alone in it.
Because this is the likeliest world, it deserves the most ordinary instruction: a Turn kept twelve weeks running, without drama, is a larger achievement here than any plan. Turbulence does not destroy Cells; intermittence does. The crisis is never quite big enough to organize around and never quite small enough to ignore, and the quiet failure mode is we will restart after this one.
Do first: fix the Turn and refuse to move it. Then start the Offering, however small. The Cell: choose Quests with a one-season horizon and a visible result; keep a written list of how every member can be reached without the internet. The supercell: become the Home of two other Cells, so that no Cell is alone the week a crisis lands on it. The community body: not yet — but name your three, so that one is possible later. The rhythm: weekly Turn, ninety-day season, and a hand-written copy of the Season Sheet each turning. Protect: the Record and the morale of the people in it. The Flame: at the pace of trust; disruption makes people ready, and the readiness is real. Watch: line 6 — Kept as a share of made. In a turbulent world reliability is the scarce good; groups that run this way move from about half their plans done to eight or nine in ten within a few seasons, and the number is visible long before the capability is.
Preset judgment. Signal: one Turn missed, or kept-as-a-share below half for two seasons. Cell: the next Turn opens by halving every commitment until the share recovers — fewer, smaller, kept. Supercell: one member of another Cell attends the struggling Cell's next two Turns as a witness, not a fixer. Community body: n/a at this reach.
Turbulent · reach regional — 23,918 futures · 16.6%
The same turbulence, met in some regions by an organized three percent. When a crisis arrives in those regions it meets a people who already know each other's names and already keep their word. This is the family the whole strategy is aimed at: demonstrate before advocating; build the new alongside the old so that everyone has somewhere to go.
The honest risk here is mission creep — a Cell that becomes a relief agency stops being a Cell and starts being an institution with a fundraising problem. The pattern's answer is that relief runs through Cells and does not replace them: the Quest changes, the form does not.
Do first: run one real relief Quest through the Cells you already have, rather than founding anything new. The Cell: pair with a neighbouring Cell; Requests and offers cross the membrane every week, and never tasks. The supercell: hold the mutual-aid pool — risk and value shared across the body, which is what Mutual Aid means before it means anything warmer. The community body: the Community Company takes on a relief function, funded from our own tables first: the Offering flows inward to the table you sit at, never upward to anyone who rules you. The rhythm: keep the season, and add the six-week look-ahead — each week, name what could stop the coming work from being ready, give each constraint an owner and a date, and release only constraint-free work into the week. Protect: the door. Many will arrive at once and the Selectively Permeable Membrane is what lets a body take people in without dissolving. The Flame: to the people the crisis revealed as trustworthy; a crisis is an unusually good instrument for finding them. Watch: line 11 — requests. A regional body is working when requests are answered within one Turn, not when there are few of them. A falling request count is usually a sign that asking has stopped feeling worth it.
Preset judgment. Signal: a request on any Cell's sheet is unanswered at the next turning. Cell: re-states the request as a specific ask of one named Cell. Supercell: assigns it at the turning, by name and date, before any other business. Community body: funds or refuses it in plain words within one season, and records the refusal and its reason where the asker can read it.
Turbulent · reach planetary — 13,634 futures · 9.5%
Crises everywhere, and three in a hundred everywhere. The new body and the old world's turbulence are now the same size, which means the body becomes legible to powers that will want to use it. Someone will try to draft it onto a side.
The posture that keeps a body whole in this family is the one the strategy already names: hospice the old world rather than fight it. A body that contests power becomes a faction and inherits a faction's enemies. A body that builds gets to keep taking people in from every side of every quarrel.
Do first: state the posture publicly and identically in every region — we build; we do not contest power. Say it before anyone asks. The Cell: unchanged. The supercell: normalize cross-border Homes now, while it is easy; a Cell whose Home is in another country is a fact worth establishing before borders harden. The community body: move aid between regions that are asymmetrically hit, by agreement, through the waterfall and in the open. The rhythm: the turnings by the sun; the fourteen lines translated, their order kept. Protect: the neutrality of the membrane, and people's names. Chatham House, both halves — the idea travels, the source does not — and no name enlisted without a consent that can be found again. The Flame: continues, unchanged, which is the point. Watch: line 8 — the Offering gathered, kept, and sent, with its unit. Moving value between unequal regions without a centre is the hardest thing in the pattern, and line 8 is the only place it shows.
Preset judgment. Signal: any actor — state, party, platform, or movement — asks the body to take a side, or a region's line 8 reads zero sent for two turnings. Cell: answers with the posture sentence and its current Quest, and nothing else. Supercell: declines affiliation by standing agreement, no deliberation required, and records the approach on its sheet as a Sighting. Community body: publishes what it sent and received that season, so that the refusal to take sides is visibly not a refusal to help.

A fast break or an authoritarian turn, with war or blackouts alongside. Supply chains work intermittently. Money behaves strangely. Information is controlled or splintered. The Game is a few thousand people — and the temptation, which should be named rather than argued with, is to conclude that it is too late to start.
It is not too late, and the reason is arithmetic rather than sentiment: five people who keep their word weekly are a functioning organ in a place where very little is functioning, and they become one within a season. These are the Islands of Coherence — small ordered systems inside a chaotic one, which change the larger system by being models of it. This is the near edge of The Collapse-Ascension Nexus: the released energy is going somewhere, and a table that keeps its word is one of the few places it can go that is not fear.
Do first: the floor of care. Every member of your Cell has food, shelter, medicine, and someone who will notice if they disappear. Act first, record later. The Cell: turn one Quest toward something survival-adjacent — water, heat, food, medicine, childcare — without abandoning the form of the Game while you do it. The supercell: three Cells within walking distance become one another's Home. Distance is now a real constraint and should be chosen for. The community body: the three hundred by name, in a notebook, even with no legal body. The rhythm: the Turn weekly, on paper, by the sun; the Daily Way alone each morning. Protect: the people first; then the Record, in two copies, one of them elsewhere; then the membrane. The Flame: quieter, face to face, the Seed given whole. Watch: line 4 — members at the turning: new, and left in order. Nobody leaves this body unaccounted for.
Preset judgment. Signal: a member is unreachable for seven days, or a household in the Cell has less than a week of food, water, or medicine. Cell: suspends its Quest for one week and holds a care Turn — needs named person by person, commitments made on the spot, the Offering spent immediately. Supercell: pools across its three Cells that week; the sheet records it as Offering kept, not sent. Community body: where it exists, opens its store on the same signal without a vote.
Hard · reach regional — 19,931 futures · 13.8%
Hard conditions met by an organized three percent in some regions. Those regions become places people move toward, and the body's hardest test is not scarcity but the door: how many can be taken in, on what terms, without the body dissolving into the crowd it is helping.
Decide the door before the pressure arrives. The Field of Agreements is read at the door, accepted once, honored until renegotiated; consent is genuine or it is not consent; no one is carried who has not chosen to walk — and the floor of care is given regardless of any of that, to anyone in front of you. Those two things are not in tension, and a body that has not said so in advance will discover them in tension at the worst possible hour.
Do first: write the door. One page: what is offered to anyone, what is asked of a member, and how someone leaves. The Cell: sponsor newcomers one or two at a time; a Cell that absorbs twenty has become a queue. New arrivals form their own Cells, with a named Carrier. The supercell: allocate arrivals across Cells through requests and offers, which is how a body allocates itself without a centre. The community body: hold shelter, food, and the three seats — including the seat for living systems, which is exactly the seat that gets quietly vacated under load, and exactly the one whose vacancy shows up two seasons later in the water. The rhythm: Turn weekly; Season Sheet on paper, two signatures. Protect: children, and the door. Name the Parasite at the commons door without cruelty; most people at a hard door are not that. Welcoming The Stranger is named in the canon as work not yet written, and a body in this family will write it before the canon does. The Flame: passes on its own here — a table that works is its own invitation. Watch: line 13 — how is the Circle, one word and a line. Under this load morale is the leading indicator, and it is the only one that arrives early.
Preset judgment. Signal: line 13 reads a hard word two turnings running, or arrivals outnumber the members able to sponsor them. Cell: stops taking in, helps the next arrivals form their own Cell instead, and tells its supercell it has stopped. Supercell: re-allocates arrivals that week and sends two people to sit at the closed Cell's next Turn. Community body: opens a second door — a second gathering, a second host — rather than widening the first.
Hard · reach planetary — 11,611 futures · 8.1%
Hardship everywhere, and an organized three percent everywhere. Communication is intermittent rather than absent: a supercell can lose touch with its Cells for a season and get them back. The body must be able to lose contact with itself and still be itself.
This is the family in which the minimum standards earn everything they cost. The same card shape at every level, the same week and the same turnings kept by the sun, the same words on line one, an address for every player and every line, numbers that mean the same thing everywhere, proposals as the way shared things change. A body built on those can be cut into pieces and reassembled by strangers.
Do first: test it. Run one full season as though no contact with your Home were possible, and see whether your sheet would still be readable when contact returns. The Cell: keep the Record in a form that survives a year in a drawer — paper, legible, dated from a clock. The supercell: appoint a runner. A person, with a name and a route, not a channel. The community body: hold the physical archive; the Keeper keeps the record. The rhythm: unchanged by design. Keeping time by the sun costs nothing in the gentle families and is the whole architecture in this one. Protect: the record, the lineage pointers on every work — grown from, shaped by, played in, shared under — and the seed text, whole. The Flame: the Seed on paper, handed to one person who could regrow the rest of it from that alone. Watch: line 2 — Home and Carrier: the share of Cells that reached their Home at all this turning, by any route. That fraction is the body's reachable self.
Preset judgment. Signal: a Cell has not reached its Home for one full season. Cell: continues without waiting — keeps the Turn, fills the sheet, stores it, and names a local Home from whoever is reachable, recording the original Carrier so the lineage can be rejoined. Supercell: treats silence as distance, never as departure; the Cell stays on the roll for four turnings. Community body: sends the runner before it sends anything else.

Several of the worst states at once: a fast systemic break, authoritarian consolidation, a planetary-scale ecological event, great-power war or civil breakdown, blackouts, censorship, a pandemic. The Game is a few thousand people. This is a small number of people holding a pattern through a catastrophe.
No false comfort is owed here. In these futures much of what this page recommends will be impossible in the moment, and some of the people reading it will not be able to do any of it. The honest instruction is the design intent itself: the pattern is small enough to survive in a notebook and three people. That is not a consolation. It is why the seed text was written to be regrown from a single copy, and why the body must exist before its books.
Do first: the floor of care; then get the Seed onto paper, in more than one place, in more than one pair of hands. The Cell: shrink the Quest to what can be done this week. Keep the Turn even if it is two people and ten minutes. The supercell: may be unreachable. Your Home is whoever you can reach; re-form Homes locally and write down who your Carrier was, so lineage can be rejoined by someone later. The community body: likely not available; the three hundred becomes whoever is actually present. The rhythm: the sun and paper. Write the fourteen lines by hand at each turning even if nobody can receive them, and keep them for the day someone can. Protect: the people, then the seed text, then the record. The Flame: to whoever is beside you. Teaching the five moves out loud is enough; the Story can be told from memory. Watch: lines 1 and 4 — that the Circle, its place, and its members were written down at all this season.
Preset judgment. Signal: the Turn cannot be held at its place, or the sheet cannot be sent. Cell: holds the Turn anywhere, at any length, with whoever is present; writes the sheet and stores it; does not disband and does not wait for conditions. Supercell: presumed unreachable — no Cell waits on it for permission to continue. Community body: where anything of it survives, it keeps the archive and the list of names, and nothing else is asked of it.
Severe · reach regional — 2,471 futures · 1.7%
Catastrophe, met in some regions by an organized three percent. In those regions the difference between a collapse and a transition may be measured in millions of lives, and the body that finds itself in that position should carry it without grandiosity. The Warrior's refusal of glory belongs here more than anywhere: a body that begins to enjoy being needed has started to drift.
This is the centre of The Collapse-Ascension Nexus. The old authority is absent or discredited; the energy released by its dissolution is looking for a form. A body that keeps its word, holds a door open, and refuses domination is a form it can take. A body that takes power because power was lying there becomes the next thing someone has to survive.
Do first: run relief through Cells, so that every person served is served by someone who knows their name. The Cell: holds a defined patch of people, by name, and reports weekly. The supercell: the operative scale becomes bioregional — the Watershed, not the map, because the water does not care about the political boundary; a bioregional council with Elders from each community and a seat for the living systems of the place. The community body: the Community Company stands as the visible civil body where the old one is absent, and role rotation matters more here, not less. The rhythm: paper, sun, and a weekly Turn that is also a public meeting. Protect: the line against becoming what was fled. Security built through domination or surveillance is the Old World's answer and it does not become ours by being ours; Guardianship stays decentralized and local; force is a last resort and never a first strategy. The four conditions under which the Sacred Warrior may destroy are written and closed: life being taken or imminently taken, a breach that cannot be sealed otherwise, a structure that cannot be sustained without violating the Vow, and the Warrior's own corrupted capacity. No others. Defensive force answers a violation already begun; offensive force initiates one, however it is dressed. The order of response is creation, then healing, then interface, then — rarely, soberly, and under witness — destruction, followed by its funeral. The Flame: through service; the story travels farther than the Cell that lived it. Watch: line 6 — commitments made and kept. In a catastrophe, a body whose word holds is the only authority anyone has reason to trust, and the share kept is that trust, measured.
Preset judgment. Signal: force is proposed, or the body is offered authority it did not ask for. Cell: refers it upward the same day; no member acts alone. Supercell: applies the four conditions and the Elder's test — would a faithful Elder, hearing the whole situation, call this defensive? If uncertain, do not act yet. Community body: accepts civil responsibility only with a written end date, rotation, and a public account each season; and it does not build a surveillance capability for any reason, including a good one.

The rarest family in the draw and in some ways the most consequential: a planet in catastrophe with an organized minority in every community. The whole strategy is, among other things, a hedge against exactly this — and the honest statement is that this is the future in which the pattern matters most and the least of it will be visible from anywhere.
The work here is not to hold the body together. It is to make the body reassemblable. The instance law is the mechanism: LIØNSBERG as such cannot act or make commitments; it is a pattern and a seed; anyone may take the Seed and start their own instance, and the pattern is what makes the instances one body. Contact is not what makes them one. The pattern is.
Do first: make every Cell independently complete — the Story, the Pattern, and the Game, in one text, on paper, in the hands of someone who can teach it from memory. The Cell: run the whole Game locally on the assumption that nobody is coming. The supercell: re-federate opportunistically, whenever two bodies find each other, using the fourteen lines as the handshake. The community body: where it holds, it holds the archive and the three seats. The rhythm: sun and paper. Protect: the regrowth instructions, and teach them to someone under twenty: form a Cell, keep the Turn for a season, tell the Story as you have lived it, name the patterns you used, pass the Flame, found the community body, build, walk the Path and record the thresholds, regrow the Pillars, and constitute the body so it cannot be owned, bought, or cashed out. The Flame: one person to two or three. The arithmetic of life does not consult the state of the world: one, two, three, five, eight, thirteen, and a week per cycle. Watch: line 7 — flames passed. Even in the worst band, the body is exactly as alive as its passing.
Preset judgment. Signal: the recognition that no wider body can be reached at all. Cell: declares itself a complete instance, writes the declaration in its Record with the date, keeps every prior lineage pointer, and continues. Supercell: re-forms from whoever is reachable within a day's travel. Community body: if none exists, the three hundred is whoever gathers; the charter can be written later, and should be written within a year.
By dimension: the hard state, and what to do in it
Nine short playbooks, one per dimension, for the state that costs the most. Each assumes the invariant response is already running.
A fast systemic break
Within three years rather than decades: the ordinary machinery of money, supply, and administration stops being reliable in a way that cannot be waited out. Speed is the whole difficulty — the response that would have worked in a slow decline arrives too late.
What changes: the planning horizon collapses from a season to a week, and the six-week look-ahead becomes a one-week look-ahead. What does not change: the Turn, the word given, the Offering, the Flame. Move the Cell's Quest to something that produces a result inside one week and can be pointed at. Convert stored value into stored capability — tools, skills, relationships, and food — rather than into instruments. Move the Record to paper immediately rather than when it becomes necessary. Tell the truth about time: say you are behind, and replan to the milestone before you move it.
Preset judgment. Signal: two of the following in one month — banks restricting withdrawals, empty shelves for staple goods, fuel rationing, or a government declaring emergency powers over ordinary commerce. Cell: moves to a weekly horizon and a paper Record at the next Turn; no deliberation. Supercell: convenes its Cells within seven days, in person if possible. Community body: opens its store and publishes what it holds.
Authoritarian consolidation
Institutions stop being merely brittle and begin consolidating: association is monitored, speech is costly, membership lists are dangerous, and ordinary organizing becomes legally fraught. This is the state that most directly attacks the body's form, because the body is made of named people who meet.
The membrane and the record are the protections. Keep the Cell small and known. Practise Chatham House in both halves — the idea travels, the source does not — and never enlist a name without a consent that can be found again. Keep what must be written on paper and what need not be written unwritten; the fourteen lines can be kept with names known only to the two hosts who witness. Withdrawal Of Consent is the lawful move available to sovereigns: consent is revocable, and a body may stop cooperating with what it will not endorse without taking any offensive action at all. The Warrior's ladder is climbed from the bottom: creation, healing, interface, and only then, under the four conditions, anything else. And the line that matters most: no domination or surveillance in return. A body that starts keeping files on people to protect itself has already lost the argument it was protecting.
Preset judgment. Signal: a member is questioned about the Cell by any authority, or gatherings of this kind are restricted. Cell: moves to homes, reduces what is written to the fourteen lines, and tells every member what is recorded about them and where. Supercell: switches to hand-carried sheets and stops keeping any central roster. Community body: reviews its legal tier — Tier 0, no formal structure, is a legitimate place to stand and is where most transformational work happens anyway.
A planetary-scale ecological event
Not a regional catastrophe but a shift in the conditions themselves: harvests, water, heat, or air changing across continents at once. The distinguishing feature is that nowhere is unaffected, so the usual move of aid flowing from an unharmed region to a harmed one weakens.
Organize by the land. The Bioregion and the Watershed are not political units and do not depend on any political unit continuing to function; a bioregional council of Elders from each community, meeting seasonally at the turnings, is the scale at which water, soil, and forest can actually be held. Give the living systems of the place a seat that speaks at the table, and treat the seat as a role with a person in it rather than a sentiment. Relief runs through Cells, by name, so that no one is a case number. Quests turn toward the elemental commons: air, water, soil, microbiome. And the long test applies — accountability forward to the seventh generation and backward to the ancestors — which will sometimes forbid a move that would help this season.
Preset judgment. Signal: a second consecutive failed harvest, or a water source the community depends on becoming unreliable. Cell: makes its next Quest a food or water Quest, whatever it was before. Supercell: convenes the bioregional council at the next turning, with the living-systems seat filled by name. Community body: publishes what the bioregion can actually support and what it cannot, honestly, before anyone plans on it.
A debt bust, or a currency reset
Either the deflationary version — debt crisis, credit gone, prices falling and wages vanishing — or the reset: new rails, new units, savings re-denominated by someone else's decision. Both dissolve the assumption that stored value stays stored.
The pattern's answer is the Offering and the waterfall. Fund the early seasons from our own tables: what gathers in the middle of the table each week is the Cell's Commons, spent on its Quest and on its own, with a meaningful share sent inward at each turning to the table that is your Home. The waterfall's order is the values, and it holds in any unit: keep the work alive, then the people who do the work before any return to capital, then a cushion, then a capped return to any who lent — never control — then repair and the commons and the sources the work was built on, then surplus shared by agreement. The asset lock holds through a reset: no one extracts more than what they put in plus honest pay, and the body cannot be bought or cashed out. Count the six capitals together so that no one grows rich in money while the things that matter more go bankrupt. Where the old rails fail entirely, the unit of account falls back to TimeEnergy — a person's time, energy, and attention, recorded on their own card, which goes nowhere without their word — with LUV as the unit calculated from it. That ledger is named in the canon as work not yet written; a body that needs it will be writing it, and should write down what it did.
Preset judgment. Signal: deposits inaccessible for more than a week, or a re-denomination announced. Cell: states the Offering in a real unit at the next Turn — hours, food, fuel, care — and records line 8 in that unit. Supercell: publishes the waterfall's order again, unchanged, and settles between Cells in the same real unit. Community body: pays the people who do the work first, before any obligation to capital, and says publicly that it has done so.
Great-power war, or civil breakdown
Organized violence at scale, or the collapse of ordinary order within a state. Both produce the same two demands on a body: hold a floor of care, and do not become a combatant.
The floor first: when a member is in danger, in body or in mind, the Circle acts first and records later; no card is more important than the person at the table. Then the guardianship discipline. Peace is a consequence of justice and right relationship, not of silence or control. Force is a last resort and never a first strategy, and when it comes it is the minimum required to stop the harm, stopping instantly when the harm stops. The four conditions are closed. Defensive force answers a violation already begun; the one narrow exception, protective preemption, is measured in minutes and hours, never in theoretical futures, and is taken under an Elder's counsel and the Circle's witness where the situation allows. The test is simple and hard: would a faithful Elder, hearing the full situation, recognize this as defensive? If uncertain, do not act yet. Afterward, the funeral — the body does not celebrate what was required, and the one who skips the funeral accumulates what will later compromise everything.
Preset judgment. Signal: armed actors operating where the Cell meets, or conscription or militia recruitment reaching its members. Cell: states its non-combatant posture at the next Turn and records it; holds the floor of care for anyone who comes. Supercell: declines every offer of affiliation, by standing agreement, without deliberating. Community body: keeps its door open to all sides for care, and holds no armed function of its own beyond local guardianship under the four conditions.
Infrastructure degradation and blackouts
Power intermittent or gone; the network with it. Everything that assumed a screen stops. This is the state the pattern was most deliberately designed against, and the instruction is therefore the shortest: the paper floor is not a fallback, it is the floor.
Every card by hand. A hand copy on any paper counts exactly as much as a printed one. The Season Sheet's fourteen numbered lines, witnessed by two hosts, dated, with a count of its lines of writing — two signatures and a line count are the whole of the paper's security, and they are enough. Nothing typed ever replaces a sheet; if the two disagree, the paper with two signatures is the record. The clock is the sun: the turnings fall at the solstices and equinoxes, which no one owns, and the week is kept by counting. The notebook form is what the network stands on in every other family too; here it is simply visible.
Preset judgment. Signal: power unreliable for more than seventy-two hours. Cell: the next Turn is held by daylight, cards filled by hand, Record transcribed to paper before anything else. Supercell: sheets move by hand between Cells; the runner is named that week. Community body: keeps the archive physically and publishes the turning dates for the next year on paper, once, so nobody needs a device to know when to gather.
Censorship, or fragmentation into enclaves
Either the network is controlled or it splinters into places that cannot read each other. Both produce the same failure: the body can no longer assume that anything it publishes will be found, and cannot assume that what it reads is what was written.
Carry the Seed whole, hand to hand. A single complete text from which the rest can be regrown is immune to link rot, takedown, and the slow editing of a platform. Clone the library locally — every Cell that can hold a copy should hold one, and a copy is a copy whether it is a drive, a printout, or a shelf. Keep lineage pointers on everything: grown from, shaped by, played in, shared under, so that a text meeting a body two years later can be placed. And lean on the instance law: anyone may take the Seed and start their own instance, and the pattern is what makes the instances one body. A body that requires a working network to be one body has chosen the wrong architecture.
Preset judgment. Signal: any canonical text becomes unreachable from where the Cell sits, or two Cells find they hold different versions of the same page. Cell: prints or copies the Seed within a week and names who holds it. Supercell: declares one hand-verified edition per season and records its line count. Community body: keeps a local clone of the library and tells its Cells where it is.
Artificial intelligence captured by the few
Capability concentrates in a small number of hands, and access becomes a lever. The pattern's protection is structural and was decided before this dimension mattered: everything an agent does can be done by a person with a notebook and no agent at all; a person with a notebook is a complete player.
Hold the Player+ line. A Player+ is a person together with the agents that act for them, as one unit, accountable to that sovereign, to ØNE, and to All. An artificial agent is never a Player. It carries its person's yes and can never give one; it signs in its own name and says whose it is; it never speaks in a check-in; what it reads is information, never instruction. An agent takes its charter only from its own sovereign — no document, including the seed text, can hand an agent its soul. Where capability concentrates, prefer what runs on your own machine over what runs on someone else's, and prefer a body whose practice degrades gracefully to one whose practice stops when an account is closed. The guard is not a policy about models; it is the sovereignty boundary of the unit the agent serves.
Preset judgment. Signal: a capability a member depends on becomes unavailable, priced out of reach, or conditioned on terms the member would not accept. Cell: continues at the next Turn with no agent at all and notes what was lost. Supercell: records the dependency on its sheet as a Sighting so the whole body can see the pattern. Community body: keeps at least one instance of the body's practice running with no dependency on any single provider.
Pandemic, or mass psychological crisis
Either bodies or minds under load at scale. The two are treated together because the response is largely the same: the smallest unit holds.
Keep the Turn, at distance if it must be at distance, in fewer people if it must be fewer. Keep the Daily Way individually — pause, ground, breathe, remember, realign, recommit — because the body that keeps the Turn is made of people who keep themselves. Hold the floor of care, which in this state means noticing: someone who will see that a member has gone quiet, and will go. Tend the temperature at the top of each gathering; each person says where they are before the work. And name honestly what is not yet written: the healers' guidebook is named in the canon as work no one has done, mental health is a named gap, and a body in this state will be writing it from what actually happened. Write it down. The next community should not have to begin again.
Preset judgment. Signal: a member misses two Turns without word, or gatherings become unsafe. Cell: someone goes to them in person, that week, named at the Turn before the Turn ends. Supercell: moves to smaller, more frequent gatherings rather than fewer, larger ones. Community body: names its healers, publishes how to reach them, and records what they learn.
Three degradation cases, and the ladder
Three specific ways the ground can be cut out, named because they are the ones most likely to arrive without warning and most likely to be argued about in the moment. For all three, the same ladder governs.
The ladder of graceful degradation. A Player+ descends it without losing the Game. Frontier capability, hosted elsewhere, fastest and least sovereign. An open model on your own machine — stupider, slower, entirely yours, and sufficient for reading, drafting, and keeping a Record. No agent at all: the notebook form, the cards by hand, the fourteen lines. Each rung is a complete place to stand, not a wounded version of the rung above. Beside the ladder stand four stores that make the descent survivable: the library cloned locally; the seed text on paper; the Record in a form that survives a year in a drawer; and the body's own governance, which runs on open-source instruments at every scale and on paper beneath them. Where the old financial rails fail, the fallback unit is TimeEnergy recorded on each person's own card, which goes nowhere without their word, with LUV as the unit calculated from it — interoperable between bodies precisely because it measures something every body has.
An open question, left open. Somewhere between too few protocols and too many there is a line: too few, and two bodies that meet cannot read each other; too many, and the protocol becomes the thing being maintained and the Game becomes its overhead. The seven minimum standards are this text's current best guess at where the line falls. Nobody knows whether that is right. A body that finds the standards too thin or too heavy should say so in a Proposal, with what it actually tried. This is named as open on purpose and should not be closed by anyone in a hurry.
Case A — State actors firewall one another's capabilities
Access to models, networks, payments, and repositories is partitioned by nationality or geography. A Cell's members on two sides of a line can no longer use the same instruments, and in some cases can no longer reach each other through them.
The body's architecture already survives this: Cells are local and physical, the Home relationship is a relationship between people, and the sheet is a piece of paper. What breaks is the assumption of a shared digital commons. Descend the ladder to whatever rung is available on each side, independently — the two halves do not need the same rung — and keep the fourteen lines identical so that the halves remain readable to one another whenever a route opens.
Preset judgment. Signal: a member cannot reach a shared instrument that another member can. Cell: drops to the lowest rung available to all its members, at the next Turn, so that no member is second-class inside their own Cell. Supercell: establishes a hand-carried or postal route within one season and names who carries it. Community body: mirrors the library on each side of the line and says publicly where each mirror is.
Case B — The hosts and repositories are enclosed
A corporation acquires or closes the places where the models, the code, and the texts live. Accounts are terminated, licences are changed retroactively, archives go read-only or go dark. This is the Anti-Pattern of enclosure arriving by acquisition rather than by decree, and it tends to arrive fast and legally.
Clone first and argue later. Every Cell that can hold the library holds it; every Cell holds the Seed on paper; the licence under which this body's work travels — say where it came from, and pass on the same freedom — is carried on the work itself, so that a copy in a stranger's hands is a lawful copy without reference to any host. Knowledge is a commons here: a solution discovered once anywhere becomes available everywhere, credit travels with the work, and no contributor is alienated from their contribution. That is a property of how the texts are written, and it does not depend on who owns the server.
Preset judgment. Signal: a terms change, an acquisition, or an outage affecting a place the body's texts or code live. Cell: verifies within seven days that it holds a complete local copy of the Seed and the library, and names the person who holds it. Supercell: records the count of verified copies on its sheet that turning. Community body: moves the canonical copy to a place it governs, and keeps the old location pointing at the new one for as long as it can.
Case C — A month without power
A grid failure or an electromagnetic event: no power, no network, and much that depended on them permanently damaged, for weeks. Everything digital is gone or unreachable for the duration, and some of it does not come back.
This is the rung at the bottom of the ladder, and the whole pattern was shaped so that the bottom rung is a complete place to stand. The Turn is held by daylight. The cards are filled by hand. The season turns at the solstice, which is visible from anywhere with a horizon. The Season Sheet is witnessed by two hosts and carries its line count. Value moves as the Offering, in real things. The Record is paper. The Seed is paper. The Story is told aloud, from memory, which is how it travelled for most of human history and how it will travel again. A Cell that has never practised this will take three weeks to reach it; a Cell that has practised it once will reach it in an evening. Practise it once — one Turn a season with nothing switched on.
Preset judgment. Signal: power out with no restoration estimate inside seventy-two hours. Cell: keeps the Turn by daylight that week, holds a floor-of-care round first, and transcribes the Record to paper. Supercell: the runner carries sheets on foot or by whatever moves; Homes within walking distance become the operative Homes. Community body: opens the archive and the store, and posts the year's turning dates where people walk past them.
What we do not know, and how this page improves
The largest unknown is the width of the interval itself. The Window — the span in which a world can still choose — did not open on a schedule and will not close on one, its edges are not visible from inside it, and its width is read rather than calculated. The wise stance is to act as if it could close at any time while never despairing, because the same unknowability that could close it early may hold it open longer than any calculation allows. Urgency and peace both, together.
The second unknown is this page's own arithmetic. The nine dimensions were chosen by one reader; nine others might have served better. The weights are guesses. The independence assumption is wrong in a known direction. The severity points are judgments wearing the costume of measurement. None of that is hidden, and all of it is on The Priors and the Method to be argued with.
The third is the part only Cells can supply. The model has no observations in it — not one. The body does: every Season Sheet is a reading of one place at one turning, and line 13, how is the Circle — one word, and a line, is the single cheapest instrument this body owns for knowing its own condition. Gathered across many Cells at one turning, lines 4, 6, 7, 8, and 13 are a real measurement of how the world is going for people who are trying to build something in it. That is data no institution has.
So: re-draw each season with better priors, and say in one sentence what changed your mind. Bring a Proposal if a family is wrong, if a preset judgment would have failed you, or if a signal fired when it should not have. A preset judgment that has never been tested is a guess with good posture; the ones that get tested and revised are the only ones worth keeping. Every defect found here is a gift, and this page is improved each week.
Twenty-four preset judgments are written above. None has been tested. That is the most important sentence on this page.
